A question that is commonly asked is, which is better for business, Facebook or YouTube? In order to answer this question we must first look into what some of the pros and cons of what each platform brings to the table.
Facebook
Pros:
1. Facebook allows viewers of the video to join your Facebook page who aren't already members by displaying an icon that directs the viewer back to your page.
2. Facebook allows viewers to "tag" their friends so that it shows up on the friend's wall and newsfeed.
3. Facebook videos make it easy to incorporate the "like" button feature thus allowing the video to be shared with all the friends of the person who "liked" the video with the potential to becoming viral.
4. Facebook allows their videos to be embedded on other websites and blogs.
Cons:
1. Facebook's "share" button only allows you to share the video on Facebook itself.
2. There is no video view count to be found on Facebook that you can leverage to show that your video is popular and has quality content.
3. Facebook videos have a track record of receiving very minimal views.
4. No one logs on to Facebook to search for videos, let alone your videos.
YouTube
Pros:
1. YouTube will update everyone of your subscribers/friends whenever you upload a new video.
2. YouTube receives a considerable amount more video views than Facebook.
3. YouTube makes it easy to share your video with the most popular social networking sites.
4. Facebook's "like" button system has the same effect on YouTube videos as it does on Facebook videos when shared on Facebook.
5. Users log on to YouTube to watch videos, not chat with friends.
6. Facebook has a "YouTube" app that allows your followers to watch all your YouTube videos right on your Facebook page (as shown to the right).
7. YouTube gives you detailed stats on each of your videos and lets viewers see how popular your videos are.
8. If you receive enough views on your videos, YouTube will pay you to display ads next to your video, small pop-ups on the bottom of the video, and ads before your video is ever played.
9. You can add icons and links on your YouTube videos which connect to your website, Facebook page, affiliate links, etc.
10. YouTube allows you to enter keywords for your video that makes it easy for people using both search engines and YouTube to find your video.
Cons:
1. YouTube may terminate your account if you upload copyrighted material, including music.
2. You can not leverage the "tag" feature on YouTube like you can on Facebook.
3. YouTube videos are less effective for creating a mailing list than Facebook.
I personally choose to use YouTube over Facebook videos. I've experimented with both, and I've discovered that I receive drastically better results from YouTube hosted videos than I do from Facebook hosted videos. What's been your experience? Which do you prefer?
